🌱 Hello! 🌱

A little about me - I’m Wulfwynn, 24 years old, I use xe/xem pronouns & my blog is queer & lgbt & trans & non-binary safe zone!

I’m a cornish folk witch & have various relationships with multiple deities (‘working with’/advisory roles & more familiar relationships mainly). I currently publicly affilate and work with the Bucca, a Cornish Celtic folk deity. I have a “speciality” in divination, animal (extinct and extant) workings & charms for friends.

I am actually a Cornish witch and not a #cornishwitch! I am invested in Cornish & wider Celtic politics and I post infrequently about that and anarchism.

Currently working on collating a bunch of Cornish folklore and traditional holiday things for the posting, but it’s slow going without many resources so it’ll be sparse for a while.

I do not follow back minors/under 18s & I do post (tagged) nsfw stuff so…maybe don’t follow.

favorite thing ab chatgpt is that if it doesn’t know something it’ll just start fucking lying. like blatantly fucking lying.

my dad teaches english classes and he just got a final paper with this sentence: “In terms of style, both poets are known for their use of imagery, but O'Hara’s tends to be more straightforward and concrete, while Stevens’ is often more abstract and metaphorical — for example, in O'Hara’s poem “The French / Window,” he writes: “A cat walks along the garden wall / and the tree waves its branches / The French / windows are blah” (lines 1-4).”

the thing about “The French / Window” is that it is not a poem that exists. at all. like, it was literally just written by chatgpt then inexplicably named as a famous frank o’hara poem. and it’s so. fucking. funny. sooo basically heads up for finals season — those of you who use chatgpt, be warned, because you will quite literally be citing nonexistent texts and your professors will show it to their daughters and together they will laugh at you endlessly and you will deserve it

I work as a librarian in an academic library and one of my tasks is filling article and interlibrary loan requests for students and faculty that they need for papers and projects.

I have had three different requests for entire lists of resources, properly formatted and correctly cited, from real journals and real authors… with articles that just don’t exist.

An article titled something like Nurses At Risk: The Growing Dangers to Public-Facing Medical Staff turns out to be written by a Chinese theoretical physicist and a German linguist. People who do exist, but never worked together and aren’t even in the correct field. Journals that are real, but never published this article.

And it’s not just scholarly articles; there were YouTube videos with hyperlinks that led to nothing. Books that had never been published. All generated nonsense.

Three. Whole. Lists. And these are from the good students who actually want to use the resources that they asked chatGPT to “find” for them. No telling how many students just tacked on a bibliography without checking to see if the sources were legit because let’s be real: students list sources all the time that they never actually read.

We’ve alerted all our faculty to this and they know to be watching, so yeah – if you’re trying to use a chatbot to generate stuff for you, better check it twice before submitting. (or better yet, do the work for real, lol. It’s less work in the long run. )

It’s very funny watching people who have never interacted with ai, like perhaps @nostalgebraist-autoresponder

They dont tell the truth! They aren’t truthful all the time! They are text generators not info generators!

Frank (the bot I @’d) gives links to fake Wikipedia articles all the time. Another ai project i follow does the same.

Like, I know most of the people who use chatgpt have absolutely no idea of the mechanics of how ai work (for that matter, 90% of the posts I see on ai make me want to tear my hair out at the sheer stupidity at play) but ai has…. no obligation to tell you the truth.

It’s numbers and ranking and pulling word order from millions of different documents. So it’s citing something right? Or saying a book or an article is by a certain person. Citations tend to look exactly the same. They are standardized. When a gpt program goes to cite something, due to the nature of the format of citations being identical across science and papers, it will pull a name at random from its pool because every name is preceeded by similar text.

That is MASSIVELY oversimplifying things, but is the bones of it.

Frankly, calling it lying is a bit too anthromorphic of you. It’s not lying, it’s looking at all the citations it has stored and picking a name from it. That’s not a lie! Somewhere within its training data that name is stored! And from the bots perspective of “this is a name that followed a citation once” its perfectly correct in putting it there!

That doesn’t make it the truth.

It’s like using a random number generator to do your math homework for you, glancing at it and going “these look like real equations”, and handing it in.

not to be problematic but i literally do not give a shit about age gaps when dating vampires. they thirst for your blood. “but it’s predatory!!!!” yeah. it is. “they’re preying on you!!!” they’re vampires. they do that. “it’s a power imbalance!!!!!!” what part of vampires are you not getting

they eat people and can turn into bats and crawl around on walls, lizard fashion, and can hypnotize you with your eyes. a) the age gap is not the creepy part and b) the creep factor is kinda the appeal

they don’t age. that’s part of the horror of it actually. would you accept eternal life, if you can never progress? can never grow or change? you’ll live forever, eternal youth, but frozen exactly as you are now. you will never become the person you’re meant to be. you are trapped in the mind of a 17-year-old forever. also ‘theoretically old if you disregard the fact that he’s a vampire’ doesn’t even make the top 20 worst things about edward cullen list. girl he’s mormon. prioritize

I was nodding along with this the whole time until that last sentence, which hit me like a folding chair

tumblr staff have…

STOP GIVING THEM MONEY! stop trying to make crab day or whatever else happen. paying for stuff from the shop is rewarding them for ignoring the userbase continuously and doing things the majority don’t want, even if the things they’re doing and allowing can cause actual deaths. staff shouldn’t be praised and get profit for ignoring their users in exchange for trying to turn tumblr into twitter 2 ft. tiktok. at this point i don’t even care for “staff are people 🥺 be nice” arguments, because even when people are being very polite in feedback, they’re perfectly fine ignoring it in exchange for implementing changes nobody wants or asked for, all because new users may like it more (and forget anyone who’s used the site for years, apparently).

leave bad reviews. don’t buy things from the shop. send feedback, even if they never reply. email them and @ the staff, send asks to the wip blog. don’t just blindly buy into “we need to support the site, buy xyz shop product”, they don’t deserve more money for giving a worse product.

ancient humans were also just some guy, if you got a baby from 60,000 BC and raised him in the 21st century he’d just be another teen boy named logan who tech decks off your arm

image

this boy from tom björklund’s art WOULD own a minecraft creeper plushy

image

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

image

ok ok ok I’m so sorry but I HAVE to talk about this

there’s something so loving about what tom björklund does and just- fuck I’m foaming at the mouth here

facial reconstruction isn’t a new concept (see the Kennewick Man/Patrick Stewart incident) but it’s difficult to find people that are truly good at it! genuinely there is a big gap in this field because there just aren’t a lot of people who do it professionally!

facial reconstruction, especially from bone or bone fragments, is such a fascinating intersection of art and science, and a tremendous amount of care is put into determining what these people might have looked like.

with that said, it’s VERY easy to screw it up

image

configuring muscle attachments and fat distribution is genuinely *very* difficult to do, and when you do it badly, you get this (pictured above). by adding too much muscle, they gave this 600 year old man a VERY interesting jawline (notice that the bottom of the chin doesn’t match up with the bone at all!) and they *really* made him look older than he was. would you believe me if I said that he was estimated to only be 46 years old?

basically I’m just REALLY excited about Tom Björklund’s art because it’s amazing work, just from an anthropology perspective

image

just look at this!!!

image
image

facial reconstructions aren’t just an artsy thing that you can just say “oh, that’s cool!” to

by giving these people faces, even if they aren’t always accurate, we open the doors for the average person to connect with the past at a very human level. sure, looking at bones is cool, but looking at art of someone that lived thousands of years ago is *incredible*

looking at a picture of a boy that lived thousands of years ago and thinking “yeah, he would’ve loved Minecraft” is EXACTLY the reaction that these pieces are meant to elicit
